DIVINING AMERICA: RELIGION IN AMERICAN HISTORY is a lecture series being held at the public libraries of Charlotte-Mecklenburg on most Sunday afternoons at 3pm. The series runs through April 25th (Easter is a free Sunday), with the Feb 7-April 11 lectures at the library uptown, 310 North Tryon Street. PREPARE/ENRICH CERTIFICATION WORKSHOP (for pre-marital & marriage counseling facilitators): This event, taking place March 16th, is designed to help facilitators learn how to administer PREPARE/ENRICH and provide feedback to couples using six core and over 20 supplemental exercises. Learn to help couples identify their strength and growth areas in categories such as Communication, Conflict Resolution, Spiritual Beliefs, and Financial Management. 2010 FAITH AND HEALTH SUMMIT: Sponsored by the North Carolina Council of Churches, with generous funding from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation and Kate B. SHARE YOUR LANGUAGE! TESOL TRAINING WORKSHOP: Learn how to teach English to speakers of other languages at a two-day workshop, April 16 & 17, 2010 at Calvary Church (5801 Pineville-Matthews Road, Charlotte). Teaching English requires more than a knowledge of English, it involves developing cultural sensitivity, understanding how people learn a language, and special teaching techniques. Ecumenical Lenten Series (hosted by Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian, Charlotte)
Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church is the venue for an ecumenical Lenten series. Each Wednesday at 12:00pm, a brief worship service will be followed, at 12:40pm, by an optional $5 lunch of soup from neighborhood restaurants, with all proceeds benefitting Friendship Trays and the Community Culinary School of Charlotte. Caldwell Memorial is at 1609 E. 5th St. (between Hawthorne Lane and Travis). Free parking is available behind the church on Park Dr., as well as the lot across from the front of the church on E. 5th St. Schedule is as follows:

SPANISH CLASSES are being offered again by the Latino Mission Christ Saviour, starting this spring semester, Thursday, March 4. The classes are being done through the Latino Mission Christ Saviour, but taking place at Bethpage Presbyterian Church (8701 Mooresville Rd., Concord). The classes (beginner level) are mainly for adults but they can also be for teenagers. Please contact Pastor Sergio Schmidt for questions by e-mail or at 704-723-4988. There is an enrollment fee of 30 dollars. That is the only fee, so come and enjoy spanish clases and coffee - on Thursdays from 6:00pm-7:30pm. IN THE TRENCHES OF TRAUMA: On Saturday, March 13, come to this one-day interdisciplinary conference offering theoretical, clinical, and experiential insight into the phenomenology, impact, and treatment of early sexual trauma. LIBRARY GRANT FOR SMALL CHURCH PASTORS: The Boudinot Library Grant is available for pastors to purchase books for their use. For details, please visitwww.pcusa.org/financialaid. There are 20 grants available of $200 per year. Available in February on a first come, first serve basis to small congregations of 150 members or less.

FTE FELLOWSHIPS FOR 2010-2011: The Fund for Theological Education (FTE) has announced that it will provide $1.5 million for the 2010-2011 academic year to theological students across the U.S. and Canada who aspire to be pastoral leaders and professors. The FTE Fellowships support talented students who are preparing for pastoral ministry and doctoral students from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups who plan to teach religion, theology or biblical studies. FREE TAX PREP FOR LOW- TO MID- INCOME EARNERS: Goodwill is partnering with the Internal Revenue Service and the Family Financial Literacy Coalition (FFLC) to offer Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) in Charlotte. This will provide free tax preparation for workers who earn low to moderate incomes and individuals with disabilities, among others. Goodwill is among 15 sites hosting free income tax assistance in Mecklenburg County in partnership with the FFLC. Through its VITA sites and financial literacy programs, Goodwill promotes the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC may provide tax breaks to working families who earn up to $48,000 and provides up to $5,657 in refunds for some. From January 25 to April 15, Goodwill will operate its VITA site at the agency’s Career Development Center at 2122 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. The service will be open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm to 9pm by appointment and on Saturday from 9am to 2pm for walk-ins. Find out more.
SCHOLARSHIPS IN PASTORAL CARE: Desert Ministries, Inc. (www.desmin.org) is currently offering scholarship assistance to Presbyterian Ministers who are interested in advancing their skill in Pastoral Care. The Mission of DMI, founded by Rev. Dick Cromie, a member of the Presbytery of Charlotte, is to help bring the Living Water of Jesus Christ to those who live in the "deserts" of human life. The website shows the range of published materials and conferences which have helped to fulfill the Mission. The Awards range from $2500 to $5000 per annum. Checks are made out to the college or seminary or approved continuing education conference where the study takes place.
